My Happy Place

In this feature, Kathryn Roebuck Holding explains her life-long connection to the Outer Banks and describes her amazing wedding in Kill Devil Hills.

I started to hear from him more and more . . . and then ran into him after a football game in Chapel Hill one October weekend where we talked for hours at Top of the Hill. The rest, as they say, is history.

“I’ve been going down to the Outer Banks since I was about one week old. My parents have a fantastic old home in Kill Devil Hills . . . it’s actually one of the older KDH homes . . .”

“This house is and always has been my ‘happy place.’ Not only do I have hundreds of wonderful family memories there from the last twenty seven years, but it also holds significant meaning for Will and me: Will asked me to marry him on the gazebo by the ocean.”

“Immediately after we got engaged, we determined the cottage would be the perfect spot for a wedding, not only because of the wonderful Outer banks location and the ‘destination’ feel, but because of the incredible memories it holds for us and my family.”

“Wes was an absolute dream to work with—he was incredibly patient, boundlessly creative, charismatic, and calming. I trusted his taste and ideas completely. When I finally decided on one color, he took my ideas and ran with them, suggesting flowers and decorations I had never dreamed of.”

” . . . And my bouquet! Unbelievably gorgeous.”

“Because Will and I opted to have an outdoor wedding, it was very important to my mom that the gazebo have some church-like elements. Wes created a beautiful large arrangement for the ‘alter’ and provided candles and lanterns to be lit by our acolytes.”

“There was not an obstacle thrown at Wes and Kim that they could not solve, which is such a relief on your wedding day when your day needs to be as stress-free as possible. It was such a gift!”

“Wes guided the wedding party down the aisle, and was even there to put the flowers in my hair after the ceremony . . . Wes is not simply a ‘flower guy’—he is an EVERYTHING guy!”

“The reception was held in our backyard under two large tents. The jazzy, colorful reception I had in mind came to life—huge Chinese lanterns in our wedding colors, gorgeous floral arrangements, ribbons everywhere . . . it was amazing!”

“I had a vision of what I wanted to create and Wes and the Holiday House made it an absolute reality.”
